Season of the oyster

There's only one species of oyster native to the San Francisco Bay: the Olympia oyster. But through over-harvesting and habitat destruction, the mollusks have almost disappeared from local waters, hurting the rest of the ecosystem. With Richmond-based environmental nonprofit The Watershed Project's upcoming habitat restoration initiative, one program leader is already saying this will be a good season for oysters.

The Bay's building blocks:

  • oysters on a rock
  • oyster close up
  • eelgrass
  • boots
  • brick with barncales
  • oyster under magnifying glass
  • reef ball and brick
