Why are you running for School Board? I'm very proud of the progress the district has made and our accomplishments in raising achievement and graduation rates and lowering truancy -- but I'm not satisfied yet. There is still much important work to do.
Why should Mission residents vote for you? Many schools in the Mission district -- Mission HS,Everett MS, Buena Vista-Horace Mann, for example, have improved dramatically under the current Board. We have put many policies and programs in place that will continue to improve conditions on the ground in Mission schools, through teacher training and coaching and supports for students. One big area we need to continue to monitor is the progress of English Language Learners as we still have too many students who have been in our schools since Kindergarten but are not fluent in English by late elementary school, middle school or even high school. I have paid close attention to this issue and particularly the overlap of English Learner status and learning differences and how well students in these categories are being served.
